Feature President and CEO of Global Inventures Deepak Kamlani will be a featured author in The Standards Edge: Future Generation™. The series is designed to “tackle the latest technological and standards issues and their impact on business.” Following is an excerpt from Deepak’s contribution. The quest for global standards is a time honored and noble cause. International and National government agencies, Standards Developing Organizations (SDO’s), and private sector industry coalitions (consortia) have made this quest a Holy Grail. In this article I hope to show that Global as a prefix and objective for any ICT standard essentially dooms it to failure. Given the ICT landscape now and that expected in the future, the best we can hope for is the Rule of 3(+N)—where the three dominant regional power blocs – North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific- utilize national or regional Information and Communications Technology (ICT) standards as strategic weapons in a new arms race to protect national and regional economic interest and achieve prominence in the global economy. ZigBee Alliance Holds Another Record-Breaking Event in San Francisco The ZigBee buzz is becoming a roar. In March 2005, following prominent coverage in the Wall Street Journal, more than 600 attendees were on hand to learn more about ZigBee's wireless PAN monitoring and control technology. Spurred by the vast market need for low-cost, low-power, scalable wireless monitor and control networks, interest in the event led to a standing-room only crowd. In a record-setting turnout, attendees viewed live demos by 27 exhibiting member companies and attended 12 educational sessions led by both ZigBee members as well as Glen Allmendinger, President of Harbor Research. ZigBee's next Open House and Expo will take place June 15, 2005, in Oslo, Norway. Details and registration are available online.
Parlay Group International Conference: Simultaneous Translation Draws Local Attendees Following surging adoption of the Parlay APIs in the Asia-Pacific region, the Parlay Group kicked off its first Japan-based Conference May 10, 2005, with an Education Seminar presented in both Japanese and English. The Education Seminar showed how Parlay/OSA brings the "retailer of services" model to the telecom domain with the full participation of Telco operators. Keynote speakers included Mr. Tadanobu Okada, Vice President and Director of Network Service Systems Laboratories at NTT, and Dr. Gilles Y. Delisle, Vice President at the Research International Institute of Telecommunications. Parlay’s Business Summit sessions included, “The Role of Parlay/Parlay-X in the SDP as Networks Evolve and Converge,” “Connected Enterprise (SOA meets componentized network),” and “Leveraging IN investments via Parlay.” Available products and services were highlighted during the Parlay Showcase, where 10 member companies delivered thought-provoking presentations and explained how their companies are using Parlay to generate new revenue. Presentations from the Osaka Conference are available online. The next Parlay/Open Service Access Conference will be held October 10-13, 2005, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Details and registration will be posted soon on the Parlay website.

From Our Communities WiMedia
Merges with MBOA The
new WiMedia Alliance represents a combination of the two leading organizations
creating UWB industry specifications and certification
programs for consumer electronics, mobile and PC applications.
Maintaining current momentum, the Alliance is conducting an intellectual
property review of the MBOA-SIG’s physical (PHY) layer
specification, and is also finalizing the MBOA-SIG’s medium
access control (MAC) layer specification.
“The groups had been working in tandem on several UWB industry initiatives,” said Stephen R. Wood of Intel and president of the Alliance. “The merge is the logical move, and we’re excited to be working as one organization.” The WiMedia Alliance is an open, non-profit industry association dedicated to collaboratively developing and administering specs from the physical layer up; enabling connectivity and interoperability for multiple industry-based protocols sharing the MBOA-UWB spectrum. WiMedia is “The Ultra in Wireless.” For more information, please contact help@wimedia.org

Grid Alliance Launches First Technical Deliverable: A Reference Model
for Grid Computing The Reference Model provides a specific context for describing requirements, standards, comparing technologies and implementing grid solutions. The model delivers a framework and set of customer-based requirements needed to accelerate enterprise grid adoption. Included in its three main components are a common lexicon of grid terms; a model that classifies the management and lifecycles of the components required for enterprise grids; and a set of use cases that demonstrate the requirements for enterprise grid computing. Like all of the EGA's work, the Reference Model is vendor neutral, technology and implementation agnostic, and will be continuously updated as the grid marketplace evolves. As quoted in the press release issued by EGA, Paul Strong, chairman of the EGA technical steering committee and systems architect at Sun Microsystems says “For the past year, the Reference Model Working Group has been working to drive consensus among industry leaders, around the basic foundations of enterprise grid computing. The result of EGA efforts is a Reference Model that allows highly complex data center environments to be described in simple, easy to understand terms. This Reference Model is a critical step toward achieving a set of agreed upon enterprise grid use cases and a common terminology for discussing grid-based infrastructures and management processes.” The Reference Model will create a basis for collaboration with other organizations to ensure standards meet enterprise requirements supporting the EGA's goal. This will reduce duplication among various groups and more quickly eliminate barriers to adoption.
